Kemple Residence and Guest Suite

A Piney Point makeover, one step at a time

The Kemple Family had two primary goals when we first started working with them: Update their children’s bath and build an in-law suite addition. Ideas to improve their home resulted in a multi phased series of projects, turning their 1980’s Piney Point home into a truly luxurious showcase home.

The key to this remodeling project was to complement and enhance the existing home. The new addition is a wing that looks back on the best part of the existing home - the long porches on the back of the house and the wide open backyard. A covered outdoor seating area features a double sided fireplace, flat screen TV, and full outdoor kitchen.

For the interior, we continued the style of the original home, building on the personality that was already there. New gray stone tile, accented with black and metal mosaics, along with black granite counters and fireplace brings the home in to the twenty-first century. The original cabinets and trim were left, or meticulously copied, keeping the design true to the original.

One of the challenges of this project was the orientation of the new wing. While the existing home is perfectly oriented, with its long sides facing north and south, the new addition is facing east and west. To alleviate the heat gain, the east side has a generous overhang, protecting full height windows from the morning sun. The west side is detailed with a skin vent - an additional airspace behind the stucco to prevent heat build-up in this wall. Small clearstory windows on the west side allow for natural day lighting.
