Tighe Residence

Bachelor Pad

At RD Architecture we define a Bachelor Pad as:

  • The ultimate entertaining venue for a single male.
  • Also known as “man cave,“ a place for a man to find peace and respite.
  • A small yet sophisticated living space, happily occupied by an RD Architecture client and his fellow felines.

After Hurricane Ike, many were left with the need and opportunity to remodel. Our Client came to us with severe water damage to his high rise home and the idea of loft style living. Requirements included an open floor plan, large kitchen with island and bar, and a generous master suite.

Building systems such as pipes and drains were immoveable and posed a challenge to expanding the kitchen and master bath. RD stepped up to that challenge…literally. We created an elevated kitchen floor to reroute plumbing to the kitchen sink. The master tub drain remained but we pushed out the walls to create an impressive walk-in shower complete with rich dark tile and seamless glass enclosure. Care and considerations were also given to four legged friends – with a location for the water purification bowl and special cat door.

To top it off we left building elements exposed - concrete ceiling joists, black iron, copper and lead piping, and electrical conduit. The exterior wall of brick and CMU was also left in a raw and unfinished state and contrasts the tight clean look of white tile floor and fresh paint providing sophisticated masculine living quarters for the modern single man.

Although this was never considered a “green” project there were a few items integrated easily enough with no extra cost to the client. These features include: Bamboo flooring, low flow plumbing fixtures, and Energy Star appliances.
