After over 20 years of living on a 5 acre lot in Richmond Texas, a newly retired couple relocates to the Houston suburbs to be closer to their children and grandchildren. The home they selected was an original 1960’s ranch but the interiors still resonated a more traditional separation of rooms. The couple hired RD Architecture with a mission to start fresh with a funky and warm contemporary style. The public spaces were opened and the ceiling raised to maximize natural light and emphasize volume in the interior. A steel beam was used to reinforce the roof structure and allowed the team to install a twelve foot wide accordion style glass door. The result was a near seamless connection with the outdoor living space. The private areas were reconfigured to address closet and bath needs for the master suite and guest bedrooms. The outdoor living space - with fire pit, kitchen and bar, along with a generous sun shelf in a heated pool - is the perfect venue for entertaining family and friends.
